I want to make sure people know that if they're thinking this journal is gonna be a mirror of my LiveJournal, then they're sadly mistaken.

Though it's fannish squee ATM (the 30 days of Backstreet meme), I tend to use my LJ for my personal/IRL stuff. My DW is for the squee/meta/fannish related things. DW is also where I post my fanworks (though I may expand it to creative pursuits in general).

Two journals, two purposes.

I just uninstalled Virtual Families.

It was partially because I tend to forget to play it (and the real time engine causes it to keep going even when I'm not playing, which causes lots of unfixable in-game issues, like character depression)... but it was mostly due to the rampant homophobia and gender stereotyping the game flaunted.

Be warned, there will be a lot of comparison to The Sims (mostly 2 and 3, but some 1 as well), and that's not just a bias on my part. This is basically a "Virtual Families vs. The Sims: The Diversity Battle"

And I probably should have done this a couple days ago when I most angry about it, but oh well.

Love And Marriage
In The Sims, every Sim is born bisexual. (Okay, okay... in actuality, every Sim is born asexual since they aren't attracted to either sex at first). It is the player's choice which orientation their Sims are, so if one player wants to make their game a heteronormative society where only men marry women and have 2.5 kids and live in houses with white picket fences, they can. However, another player can go ahead and make every single one of their Sims gay and have them sleep around and be, for lack of a better term, sluts.. they can as well! (And then there's people like me, who want to make some of their Sims straight and others gay... and they all live in houses with white picket fences because gay couples deserve their 2.5 kids and white picket fences too, damn it!). And in The Sims, there is marriage equality! The game only checks relationship scores when one Sim proposes to another, so gay couples can get married if the player so desires (though it was called a "joined union" in TS2. TS3 calls it marriage straight out).

However, in Virtual Families, every character is straight. With no way to change it. It only sends marriage proposals from characters the gender opposite the one you're playing. One could say "well duh, the point of the game is to have kids and keep the lineage going! Gay couples can't do that!" But! But! The game has adoption coded into the engine! And the FAQs/rules state a couple "either has to have or adopt a kid for it not to end" so adopted children count as far as lineage goes. If couples can adopt, why not code it where they can be gay? It can be precoded when you adopt the character for all I care. Then, the random event for adopting a child can occur more frequently than it does for straight couples (to counter the fact the straight couples can have their own children).

Gender Stereotyping
This part of the rant refers specifically to the children in the game.

In The Sims, the only check done if a character wants to play with a certain toy is an age check (can a Sim in this age group use this item?). Therefore, both boys and girls are allowed to play with the dollhouse (and though this is a technical thing, it needs to be said: the animation sequence is exactly the same for either gender). Both boys and girls are allowed to play with the Easy Bake Oven. If there were a toy tool bench (did Free Time add one of those?), both boys and girls would be allowed to play with it too! Sure, sure... I know these are all technical things to make the game easier to code, but it does send a message to any kids playing (with parental supervision, of course).

And now... the part of this rant that actually sparked the rant in the first place: In Virtual Families, little girls have the option to "play Mommy" and little boys have the option to "play Daddy." Little girls head over to Mommy's closet (assumingly to play dress up), and little boys run into the workshop (to play with daddy's tools). And it just me go, "*sputter* Aglrhbgrhhbj! Are you serious?" And then I raged and ranted and here we are.

And one can say it's the first attempt. Virtual Families 2 could have all that. But to that I counter protest two things: 1) Even The Sims 1 had all this, and 2) the company that makes Virtual Families also makes the Virtual Villagers games. There's 3 of those. None of this yet in those games either.
fangirlism: (OT3)
Did I mention that I'm a failure? Have I put any of my reveal posts up on time?

*checks tags* TWO! I scored 50% on the "get reveal posts up on time" test! See? Fail!

I Saw Three Ships author reveals were six days ago, and I'm just getting this up now?

I totally just forgot, really.

Anyway...

I wrote Couldn't Have Done it Without You (popslash, R, slash [Lance/Chris/Nick], 2027 words) for [personal profile] pensnest. My author's notes sum up my thoughts on this story pretty perfectly:
This was, seriously, hard for me! Not only have I never written a threesome before (so, already out of my comfort zone), but I have never written any of the *NSYNCers before this story (I am pretty strictly Backstreet). This was, seriously, hard for me! Not only have I never written a threesome before (so, already out of my comfort zone), but I have never written any of the *NSYNCers before this story (I am pretty strictly Backstreet).

Another somewhat new thing for me (I think I've done it on ficlets but nothing with any semblance of a plot) was that I did the whole thing in first person. That one was all [personal profile] bellamyrose's doing (okay not all, but she was the one who said, "You should write what you know. Write it from Nick's POV. Chris' and Lance's characterization will come to you if you only have to figure it out through Nick's eyes.") and that gave me the first person idea. And I can't get through this without thanking [livejournal.com profile] musicboxgirl who was my major hand holder throughout this whole thing!

Your result for The Fan Fiction Personality Test ...

The Shipper

Slash, pairings and Playboy plot bunnies.

You are very likely female, and you very likely examine characters for their "slashability". Though you insist that your stories don't circle around love and sex between attractive characters, they do.

It is also likely familiar to you that at a certain point in your story, a character (or more) discovers that he (and rarely even she) is gay, and starts a relationship with another character.

Your fanfiction meets the taste of many, especially if your pairing happens to be between two attractive males that are straight in canon.

You probably wrote something about Harry Potter falling in love with Draco Malfoy, Legolas starting a secret romance with Aragorn or Obi Wan being a sex sklave of Han Solo. If not, you probably still consider to do it.

Wow. Hi accurate result.

First off, Make The Yuletide Gay author reveals were today!

I wrote Difficulty Level: Moderate (popslash, PG, slash [Brian/AJ], 1226 words) for [livejournal.com profile] daisiesdaily. This one was actually the easiest of the fics I had to write this year, obviously.

I just had to find a way to do it without smut, which proved to not to be a problem at all when I got 500 words in and hadn't even introduced AJ yet! (Heh. Oops.)

Also, 3 Ships fics went live! I got Reaper fic! People should go read "En Suite" (Reaper, PG-13 bordering on R, slash [Sam/Sock/Ben], 1007 words).
fangirlism: (Default)
Yuletart reveals were actually the fourth, but I had to work, then got caught up replying to my comments, and then kinda forgot to post this.

Yesterday wasn't any better.

But here I am!

Though it's probably no surprise, I did 'Dera's All Up in Stitches (Ugh I hate that title, but it was one of those "had to come up with something quick!" moments) for [livejournal.com profile] charpieinuse (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, G, gen, cross stitch on 14-count Aida). I probably could have managed my time much better, but I was doing this on top of NaNoWriMo, so I ended up not finishing it in time, so I had to submit it in a not-totally-finished-but-no-one-will-tell state.

I'm still working on finishing it (I have an artsy afternoon planned with my best friend, hopefully I'll get some decent work on it. (I need to rewrite my symbols chart, oops! I seem to have misplaced it.)

Make the Yuletide Gay reveals and I Saw Three Ships stories later today!

Edit: Unrelated, but due to the fact I'm changing the way I use this journal, I've redone all my tags and made all my old, crossposted entries (except my Dear Santa letters), private (only because I can't mass delete them).
fangirlism: (Default)
I'm going to try very, very very hard to just use this account for fandom related stuff (because the username "fangirlism" is just so perfect for that!) and use my LJ for other stuff.

Stuff might be crossposted to LJ, but that'll be the exception, not the rule.

So I was originally gonna do one giant thought process post on the 6th once I Saw Three Ships stories went live and Make The Yuletide Gay authors were revealed, but that was back when I was planning on doing this on LJ. Now that I'm switching it up, I don't mind pseudo spamming this week.

Soooooo... I actually only wrote one story this year. I wrote The Three Not-So-Gifts of the Devil (Reaper, PG-13, gen, 1768 words) for [livejournal.com profile] sock_me_amadeus, and with what a pain in the neck this story was, I'm not surprised I didn't write any others (the fact I had two other exchanges to juggle didn't help either.) Anyway, I needed to write an in-character (season 1 canon only) fic with a Sock and Ben focus to the prompt "the three souls at Christmas." The prompt helped me wonders (except for one thing that I'll get to later), because I was given a "no smut" clause, and the prompt lent for a longer story.

It was the "focus on Sock and Ben" and "keep them in character" parts that proved tough.

For people who don't know the canon, the characters I was assigned are supporting cast. The story revolves around their best friend, he's the big hero. How do I "write him out" so the other two get the focus. I threw ideas back and forth (thanks forever and a day to [livejournal.com profile] steelneko, who was my idea bouncer/handholder), but nothing was working, until I got the idea of having this canon plot device that does exactly what I needed it to while also working well with the story plot/canon.

The other big issue I had to idea bounce was, exactly, who the three souls would be, and how could I relate them to Christmas. The first one ("Rosalie Lunsford") came to me fairly easy. The second ("Dewitt Bolliger") just hit me one day and I ran with it. The third ("Jim Solorzano")... oh I was ready to kill him a second time myself. I had such a hard time figuring out who he was and what he did and how was I ever gonna connect that to Christmas. I may have flubbed the science on Solorzano's quite a bit, but it's fiction, so I'm allowed.

I'm not 100% proud of this story. For a first try in a new fandom, it's alright, but I could have done so much better.
fangirlism: (Default)
I've been soooooo busy lately, but I wanted to get into a tradition of doing fanfic recs, at least for Yuletide and MtYG. So, first, MtYG. Five tiny recs.

Christmas Wishes Come True (Chris/AJ, Brian/Nick): This was my gift fic. While I don't know the *NSYNCers as well as I should (maybe that'll be one of my 2010 goals?), I do know this had an IC AJ. Also, bonus mpreg!

Recessive Genes (Howie/Nick, Howie/JC): Without giving too much away, OMG HOWIE!!! And Nick coaxing Howie into dating JC. And the Howie/Leigh marriage stays in tact!

Will You Be (Brian/Nick): I love the Nick in this, all naive and innocent. Poor kid just wants his superhero.

Gangsters, farmers, friends and lovers (Brian/Nick, Chris/JC): Lovingly dubbed "the Facebook fic" by me, I couldn't help but giggle at how true this all is. And the Brian and Nick in this, oh how I loved them.

Public Relations (AJ/Nick): The Powerpoint presentation slayed me! AJ batting his eyelashes at Nick! Their faces when Brian and Howie force them to keep up the charade! Backstreet at their finest.
fangirlism: (OTP! :D And such)
There will only be a part the second. I was gonna wait, and have these all done at once after the 3 Ships archive opened, but I realized that would mean it would be done after the artist/author reveals at Yuletart, Yuletide, and MtYG, and I wanted to do this during the anonymous period.

So, since the 3 ships archive opening coincides with the MtYG author reveals, I'll amend the squee post for that to my author/artist musings post for the other challenges.

And, without further ado...

I'll post about them in the order I received them.

First, Yuletart. I received "Best of Friends" (The Listener, G, gen, digital drawing). This was posted on a day I really needed something to cheer me up, and boy did this ever cheer me up! I really didn't get a chance to post a coherent comment because I was too busy squee-ing. First off, if you have ever seen the show (I don't believe I have any Listener fen added... yet), how spot on are Craig (Toby) and Ennis (Oz)?! I mean, they're in the artist's style, but it was very clear, to me, it was Craig and Ennis. Second off, this is totally in character for Toby and Oz, to be buddy-buddy like this! Third off, the artist? Really, really talented!

Second, MtYG. I received "Christmas Wishes Come True" (popslash, PG to PG-13, slash [Chris/AJ and hinted Brian/Nick], 1263 words). Okay. Wow. This one was a shock to me, mostly because it's the first year my writer hasn't gone the Brian/Nick route (they tried though, with a couple of lines that did make me smile). But the fic totally makes up for that by being mpreg (why yes, I am one of those who is totally not squicked by that, and in fact loves it to death)! It's a kink actually done in popslash quite a bit, but never before in a story just for me! :D

Last (for now), Yuletide. I received "Aqueous Transmission" (The Listener, PG, slash [Toby/Oz], 2285 words). I was so excited when I guessed that I was getting Listener fic this year for Yuletide, because I wanted a fic for that fandom more than any other! And not only did I get Listener fic, I got my Toby/Oz mind reading fic! It was exactly perfect, with Toby (ab)using his powers to tap into Oz's head and realize there were romantic feelings there, and it didn't get too graphic, their little cuddling scene was more than enough for me! :D

fangirlism: (Default)
Okay, so it's probably way too late for this, and you've already started writing. But if you have not, here we go:

General things about my preferences (unfortunately copied from, well, all my other Dear Writer letters this year, but it stays the same across the board):

What I Like
kid!fic (as in, the characters have kids, not the character are kids - toddler age is perfect), crushes/beginning of relationship (the concept of the feelings coming to fruition and both parties going, "WTF is going on? Why am I acting this way around him/her?" is one of my favorite fandom tropes), smut is always good, flirting.

What I Don't Like

Incest, bestiality and molestation are my only three sexual squicks, fandom has desensitized me to everything else. Character bashing. Yes, I'm generally a slasher but that doesn't mean I hate the female characters (or, if I do, it's for reasons unrelated to "I ship her love interest with her best male friends and she gets in the way of the gay sex"). On that note, I also hate when writers completely disregard canon pairings. As much as I don't want them to, they exist. If you're gonna break them up, let us know how it happened. Please. I also don't like character death (unless it's a person that has died IRL).

Popslash specific likes:
Europe era! (Goes along with my crush/start of relationship trope I like). Tour based fics (cramming two guys into one bus? LOVE!).

Backstreet Boys, Brian/Nick

Okay, so, let's see... there has been a lot of new "canon" for BSB this year, so you have a lot to work with if you wanted to go that route. A little birdie told me that these two have a "moment" on their This Is Us tour (choreographed into a song, even!), so if you don't mind being spoiled (or have already seen the show) and want to work it in that'd be awesome. (I myself haven't seen it due to not wanting spoilerage.)

Crossover, Chris/AJ

A simpler request: So AJ mentioned in an interview that the "big BSB/*NSYNC" feud was based around the fact AJ dated Amanda Latona after Chris did, so something where they have to interact due to that (but it turns to something more) would be totally cool!

In general, don't stress. I'm easy to please.

(This is letter 3 of 4... that means ONE MORE! \o/!)
fangirlism: (OT3)
fangirlism: (OTP! :D And such)
First off, thank you so much for making a piece of artwork just for me, and don't be scared by the new name/face! (Isn't that the fun of challenges like this? :D)

Trust me, I am very easy to please, being a writer first and an (pseudo-)artist second.

I just wanted to elaborate on my requests, because I realized I didn't give you that much to work with (if you're already off and running cause it has been a week and a half, don't worry and totally disregard everything written here!).

So my initial requests were:

Really, my only specific requests are in regards to pairings:
Katekyo Hitman Reborn! - Dino/Tsuna, Tsuna/Haru or Haru/Kyoko
The Listener - Toby/Oz
Reaper - Sam/Sock, Sam/Sock/Ben, or Sam/Cady
Otherwise, anything at all you come up with will be wonderous for me!

Which still kinda stand, but if you need a little inspiration, I do have a few prompts you could work in:

Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Dino/Tsuna - I really love placing them between Varia arc and TYL arc, where Tsuna has taken his spot as Vongola X. Take it from there.
Tsuna/Haru - Either the same timeline as above, or high school. That would be so cute!
Haru/Kyoko - CAKE DAY! This whole ship revolves around cake day for me.

The Listener
Toby/Oz - A prompt that works better in fic than in art, but something incorporating Toby's mindreading would be so cool!

Reaper
Sam/Sock or Sam/Sock/Ben - These guys need more love. Whether you go with just Sam/Sock, or do all three... start with a night of drinking?
Sam/Cady - "You're not my sister"

Again, thank you, so much, and don't stress yourself out!

(Note to f-list: This is Dear Santa letter 1 of 4.)
